Mulitpane Rooflight Audley Edge
A long continuous rooflight was required to provide light to a new extension at a prestigious home in Cheshire’s Audley Edge.
Approximately 8m long x 1m wide the rooflight was divided into 9 bays, but the client did not want to see any intermediate aluminium glazing bars. The solution was to upgrade the glass to 13.5mm toughened laminated inner pane with an 8mm toughened outer pane enabling the glass to span across the width without additional support. The insulating glass units were then joined using structural silicone to create and entirely weather-proof result at the 5° degree pitch.
Solar heat gain was a potential problem, so neutral solar control glass was used providing good light transmission at 70%, but only lets through 30% of the sun’s heat making it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature in summer months. The same glass has a low-emissivity coating providing a centre pane uvalue of 1.0W/m2.K thus offering superior heat retention in winter time.
Access was limited, so the rooflight was supplied with loose glass making for easy handling on site by Lonsdale dealer, Red Systems Ltd who’ carried out the installation and structural glazing.
